In March 2009, The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall visited the Galapagos Islands as part of an official programme focused on conservation and environmental sustainability.

According to a press release issued by Clarence House, their visit included meetings with environmental authorities, a visit to the Charles Darwin Foundation, and a series of discussions on the long-term protection of the islands.

As part of this itinerary, Galapagos Safari Camp hosted an official evening reception on Santa Cruz Island, attended by Their Royal Highnesses and representatives from Ecuador’s Ministry of the Environment.

The visit formed part of a wider international tour designed to draw attention to climate change and the global significance of the Galápagos, whose ecosystems played a central role in the development of Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution.

“Their royal highness’ visit is timed particularly to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Darwin, 150th anniversary of the publication of On the Origin of Species and also the 50th anniversary of the Galapagos National Park.”

More broadly, the visit reflects an ongoing dialogue around how tourism, development, and conservation intersect in the archipelago. In a later feature, Financial Times highlighted the work of The Prince’s Foundation in promoting more sustainable approaches to building on the islands, focusing on measures such as natural ventilation and reducing reliance on energy-intensive cooling systems .

These ideas point towards a wider shift in how the Galapagos is experienced and developed, where the balance between comfort and environmental impact remains central to its long-term preservation.
