Islands to Visit in the Galapagos

A guide to the inhabited and uninhabited islands of the Galapagos

At a Glance: Galapagos Islands

This guide introduces the main Galapagos islands and visiting sites across the archipelago, helping you understand which locations best suit your interests and how different tour formats shape the experience. It also links to individual island guides for a deeper look at each island.

The islands fall broadly into two categories: inhabited and uninhabited. Most well-balanced itineraries include both.

The inhabited islands, such as Santa Cruz and Isabela, offer highland ecosystems, giant tortoise reserves, lava tunnels, beaches, museums, and places to stay, along with abundant wildlife encounters on land and in surrounding waters.

The uninhabited islands are reached on guided day visits by boat (either a cruise ship or a day boat) and provide additional coastal and marine wildlife experiences.

Which Galapagos Islands to visit?

Choosing which Galapagos Islands to visit can feel daunting. Spanning more than 8,000 sq km in the eastern Pacific, the archipelago includes 13 main islands and dozens of smaller islets and rocky outcrops, far more than can be covered in a one- or two-week trip.

So, which islands are best for visiting, especially for wildlife?

The Icons

Wildlife in the Galapagos is not confined to any specific islands. Many of the archipelago’s iconic species can be encountered across multiple islands, particularly when combined with land excursions on Santa Cruz, as they are on all our Safaris.

How To Visit

The more important question isn’t which islands to visit, but how to visit them.

Visiting more islands, whether inhabited or uninhabited, does not necessarily mean seeing more species. Many of the best Galapagos Islands for wildlife are accessible from Santa Cruz and nearby visitor sites.

The Tour Format

What shapes the experience most is the type of tour you choose.

Many operate in large groups with shared guides and fixed schedules. In recent years, there has been a rise in “island hopping” tours, where large groups are shuttled between ports, spending little time beyond the towns themselves.

Our Approach

Our tailor-made Safaris are not designed to cover as many islands as possible in a short time. Instead, they prioritise depth, flexibility, customisation and expert-led exploration across land and sea. Offered as private or semi-private, our Safaris allow for a deeper connection with the wildlife and landscapes. An alternative to mass-tourism models.

Islands We Visit

Santa Cruz, where Galapagos Safari Camp is based, sits at the heart of the archipelago. From here, we offer day trips by boat to nearby uninhabited islands including North Seymour, Bartolomé, South Plaza, and Santa Fe.

Our Safaris can also be extended to include Isabela Island, the largest and one of the youngest islands in the Galapagos.
