“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.”

– Margaret Mead

The Ecuador Earthquake Recovery Fund (EERF) embodies this sentiment in action. Following the major earthquake that struck Ecuador’s coast, a network of individuals quickly mobilised to raise funds and deliver aid.

The first fundraising campaign raised more than $80,000 to assist coastal communities still recovering from the devastation. Today, the EERF continues to focus on sustainable rebuilding — prioritising housing and access to clean water in areas where support has been slow to arrive.

In partnership with Waves for Water, the team has distributed water filters and resources to affected families. Architects and engineers with experience in remote construction are collaborating on practical, durable housing solutions, while other members work with local communities to restore livelihoods, from sourcing seafood for Quito restaurants to exploring community-based tourism.

The goal is not only to provide immediate relief but also to invest in long-term resilience: helping villages rebuild homes that can grow with them over time, supported by sustainable income opportunities.

The EERF team continues to consult with experts to balance urgent recovery needs with long-term planning, ensuring that funds are channelled directly into rebuilding efforts rather than administrative overheads.

We remain deeply grateful to everyone who has contributed. As recovery continues, ongoing support is vital, whether through donations, technical expertise, or simply spreading awareness.
